BBC micro high scores, from the magazine Acorn user --------------------------------------------------- Scores collected by W.H.Scholten ( http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/ ) This file was last updated 2017-11-30 =================================================================================================== See also my list of scores from the internet, and my own scores in a few more text files, and see my website where I analyse some game scores, on whether they are real, or made on e.g. an Acorn Electron: http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/ - To get your hands on scans of the magazines have a look here: + http://www.8bs.com/magazines.htm + https://retropdfs.wordpress.com/ Retropdfs's pdfs are, at least for Acorn user, based on the pdfs on 8bs.com, but the retro pdfs have the advantage of added searchable and selectable/copyable text (not perfect but good enough so you can copy and do some slight editing to correct errors). =================================================================================================== I checked 'Acorn user' from the first issue up to 1991-12, in the letters section and later the game section but also letters, just in case. The last high score table that I could find in that period was from 1990-3. =================================================================================================== The high scores in Acorn user are from ca. end of 1984 onwards, not very useful in determining real high scores due to no splitting of high scores for the BBC micro and Acorn Electron. AU should have not allowed any more high score submissions, unless the submitter stated it was made on a BBC micro or Electron, and also using the corresponding version! (not the Electron version on a BBC nor the BBC version on an Electron). You can tell that many scores are not made on a BBC micro. In case of Planetoid I'm not sure if the 2.8M and 3.1M scores are just made up or made with the Electron or Electron version on the BBC, from my testing and playing with scores up to almost 1M points, I am fairly sure that these scores are not possible on the BBC with a BBC micro version of Planetoid. For Meteors it's similar. See more on this topic on my site: http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/bbc/spellen/highscores.html =================================================================================================== ============================================================ AU: Acorn user: ============================================================ ==== AU 1982-12: p. 74: Letters: Information on Snapper + high score 145440 ==== AU 1983-1: p. 59: Letters: Related to a question on preventing keyboard wear and whether the RETURN key could be remapped for Defender to prevent wear, the people from Acorn user wrote: ----- Acornsoft staff have notched up over 410,00 on Defender, 300,000 on Snapper. 110,000 on Monsters and 43,000 on Meteors. And yet they know of only one keyboard which gave problems - and that was on a pre-production model where the space bar became 'unreliable' after nine months! So if your keyboard wears out let Acorn know. ----- ==== AU 1983-12: p.163: Letters: ----- Sir, During the summer my brother bought the Acornsoft game Planetoid. I found the game difficult at first but soon I increased my high-score to 92,650. Could you ask your readers to write in and say what the records are on Planetoid? Charles Painter (age 12) Wiltshire ------ ==== 1984-2: p. 168: Letters: ------ Incidentally, in answer to Charles Painter's Planetoid claim (December issue), my high score on this excellent game is 128,000. Richard Porter London ------ ==== AU 1984-3: p. 169: Letters: ----- Sir, I wish to inform you that my highest score on Acornsoft's Planetoid is 503,300. I obtained this some time ago, but as I am now into machine code programming and computer electronics, I long ago ceased to exhaust myself on playing games. By the way, Planetoid was the first and the only action game I've bought. I found my initial investment of gbp 10 has been truly worthwhile. Kai Rotherham ----- ==== AU 1984-6: p. 165: Letters: ----- Sir, with reference to high scores. The highest scores achieved at my school to date are: Snapper - 116,320 Snapper (joystick) - 143,420 Dare Devil Dennis - 6520 Meteors - 21,250 Monsters - 38,680 Zalaga - 132,260 Rocket Raid - 700,000 + Arcadians - 28,760 Defender - 356,775 Planetoid - 236,100 Starship Command - 1376 Moon Raiders - 285,580 Killer Gorilla - 496,200 One interesting score is the Rocket Raid one this is achieved by 'cheating' thus: 1. PAGE = &E00:*TAPE 2. CHAIN"" (load Rocket Raid) 3. When the game has loaded press BREAK 4. Type CALL&E00 and press Return 5, Destroy all 3 ships - the screen will go haywire 6. Wait approximately 3 minutes 7. Play game 8. You now have about 70 men before step 6 repeats. N.B. The score is reset on pressing ESCAPE. B Nesbit Northants ----- ==== AU 1984-8: p. 59: Letters: ----- High rollers Sir, I have an idea to improve your magazine, that is if you can improve on perfection (creep, creep). It came to me (the idea that is), while reading B Nesbit's letter in your June issue. How about keeping a list of the highest scores achieved by readers at various popular games? Mr Ee! is the only high score which has been beaten since May 1986. Not only that but the table is dominated by three people. These scores represent gaming skill, cer- tainly more than I possess, but what is the point? These people are obviously good but they are credited every month and the scores are out of reach of most people. The way arcade game de- signers by-passed the skilled few was to have an all-time hall of fame, to be looked on with wonder, and a daily high score so people like me had a chance. Although you can contend that the micro games market is different, it cannot be so different or you wouldn't print high scores. The inclusion of a monthly high score total would, I am sure, liven up this section of the magazine. V J Roberts Essex Points taken, so here's a new set of rules for high scores in future issues. First, the score must be witnessed by two people, at least one of whom is over 18, and preferably a parent. Second, any score un- beaten in three months will go into an 'all-time best' list- ing at the bottom of the reg- ular table. Third, entries must say which machine the scores were on - BBC, Master or Electron - so we can do sepa- rate charts. Let's see if that livens up the chart. ---------- ---------- Latest round-up of games high scores Battletank Superior 117,400 Stephen Gayler Castle Quest Superior 2,270 Jonathan J Hallet Fortress Pace 138,720 Stephen Gayler Match Day Ocean 14-0 Peter Harvey Mr Ee Micro Power 1,012,950 Stewart Roberts Overdrive (BBC) Superior 380,640 Stephen Gayler Rocket Raid Acornsoft 168,010 Stephen Gayler Zalaga Aardvark 29,329,420 Stephen Gayler All time bests: Aviator, P. Anyway, enough of the rules, I would be interested to receive high scores or low lap times on Revs, fastest time to beat, or slowest computer think time on White Knight chess and highest level on The Sentinel. ---------- ==== AU 1987-6 p. 137 "The games page": ---------- Acorn User high score table GAME SCORE NAME Alien 8 28 lost F Brown Android Attack 149,105 T Hedger [ again, score is 1,495,105 in previous tables ] Arcadians 98,020 N Islam Aviator 30,450 P Hopgood Battletank 117,400 S Gayler Beach Head (B) 204,800 J Freu Beach blead (E) 361,000 I Pierce Boffin 582,155 I Surman Castle Quest 2,240 P Simpson Centipede 2,000,010 C Cochrane Chuckie Egg 32,002,640 N Wright Commando 417,600 P Sharrock Contraption 993,200 C Cochrane Cybertron 1,856,840 S Gelder Danger UXB! 105,710 M Gullick Eagle's Wing 112,700 R Schmidt Exploding fist (B) 397,100 C Parsons Exploding fist (E) 597,000 H Moore Fortress 138,720 S Gayler Frak! 20,000,200 P O'Malley Free Fall (B) 5,024 P Comber Free Fall (E) 7,605 I Jones Hopper 63,104 N Brown JCB Digger 131,450 S Concoran Karate Combat 166,608 I Surman Killer Gorilla 836,475 S Concoran Match Day 16-0 J Freu Meteors 498,500 P Ludgate Missile 469,225 I Boffin Monsters 283,000 S Concoran Moonraider 642,125 S Concoran Mr Ee! 1,415,500 S Roberts Overdrive (B) 380,640 S Gayler Overdrive (E) 1,130,700 S James Painter 103,690 N Shaw Pengo 312,900 S Killworth Planetoid 3,186,450 S Concoran Pole Position 110,000 P Gauagher Repton 2 20,468 I Simmons Revs (Oulton Park) 1:17.9 C Cochrane Revs (Silverstone) 1:24.5 I Surman Rocket Raid 168,010 S Gayler Snake 1,395 P Simpson Snapper 2,187,670 P Simpson Space Adventure 4,890 M Bradshaw Starship Command 8,420 I Boffin Stryker's Run 16,100 P Sharrock Thrust 1,054,450 T Simpson Winged Warlords 336,000 C Dunn Yie Ar Kung fu 675,300 I Surman Zalaga 29,329,420 S Gayler And a special early Firetrack score of 324,000 by Bill Bauer.
