BBC micro high scores (by W.H.Scholten): ---------------------------------------- =================================================================================================== In 1984-1985 I didn't have many games as I didn't copy games, I bought a few and was given a few for e.g. Christmas. I had: - Planetoid (copy, sold by computer shop, didn't know it was copied!), Super invaders (copy, ditto), Killer gorilla (copy, ditto), Escape from Moonbase Alpha (also I think a copy) - Elite (original, 1984), White Knight Mk11 (original, 1984), Fortress (original, 1984), Ghouls (original, 1984), Micro olympics (original, 1984), Hunchback (original?), Arcadians (German version, original; 1985?, cheap from a bargain bin in my local computer shop hence likely 1985), Hopper (German version, original; 1985? Ditto, from a bargain bin), Cylon attack (original, 1985? Also from a bargain bin. I didn't like this game), Canyon (1985? Again from a bargain bin. Poor game). - I don't think I had an original or copy of Rocket raid, but I played it a few times in my local computer shop (1984) =================================================================================================== My scores, with some comments: - 1984-1985: Planetoid: ca. 440k (and ca. 120k playing on radar only), Killer Gorilla: ca. 75k, Hopper: ca. 30k, Arcadians: ca. 30k. Ghouls: Can't remember, Super invaders: Can't remember this one either, not one of my favourites, didn't play it much. Hunchback: Ditto. Fortress: Not sure what score I got in 1984 nor 1985... - 1986: Fortress: I decided that year to try to beat the score that I read about in 1984, that Mat Newman achieved. In an interview in a magazine it was said to be 144k. I then got to in particular the scores 248,000 and 268,000, these 2 were 'perfect' scores as I never died from planes or rockets or force fields, only from lack of fuel. I scored more 200k+ scores that year but when I got to my higest score, I quit, there was no more challenge. I even shot a few hard to get barrels behind walls at close distance. To get further you need to shoot fuel tanks that almost impossible to get to (very close to walls). - 1995-1997,2001,2017: Planetoid: 979,450 (27-11-2017) (I reached wave 56) [ I was not playing as well up to 700k as in my 941k game. I'm sure I can score 1.1 million - 1.2 million. My best score in 1995-1996: 888,150 (27- 4-1996) (wave 53) ] Planetoid on radar only 445,525 ( 6-12-2017) [ Cover up the rest of the screen with cardboard so that you only see the radar! I think I can score a lot higher! My best score in 1995-1996: 417,650 (19- 5-1996) ] Planetoid in mutant fest 189,325 (12-12-2017) [ shoot all men immediately at the start of wave 1,5,10,15 etc., then continue playing this way, so in a continuous mutant fest, without using any smart bombs. From this you learn how to deal with mutants... ] Planetoid without smart bombs <> Planetoid without radar <> Rocket raid: 70,510 (30- 9-1996) [ I've not played this game much in 1995+ ] Arcadians: 24,070 ( 3-11-1995) [ I also have not played this game much in 1995+ ] Meteors: 42,900 (18- 6-1996) (I reached sheet 13) [ Very hard game, I think I can score higher but that would take a lot of practice. In 2017 I reached 42,400. ] Super invaders setting 1: 64,500 (20- 3-2001) [ I don't particularly like invaders type games but I remember that I tried to get as far as possible to see all alien types, and this score is quite good but can be improved, surely. ] Super invaders setting 2: 7,700 (17- 2-1997) Super invaders setting 3: 6,120 (11- 2-1997) Killer Gorilla: 90,800 (23- 7-1995) (I got to level 6, screen 2) Snapper v1: 158,620 ( 4- 9-1995) [ I only played the Snappers to see what would happen with the fruits, and I stopped trying to get a higher score as pacman type games never appealed to me. ] Snapper v2: 184,330 (30- 8-1995) Asteroids deluxe, hard + shields: 21,550 (25- 7-2017) [ played it briefly in 2001, and again briefly in 2017, far higher scores are definitely possible ] Swoop: 5,240 (24- 5-1996) Cosmic camouflage: 5,160 (13-11-2017) Galaforce: 32,190 (21- 7-2017) Galaforce 2: 359,060 (20- 7-2017) (from galaxy 1 to 29) [ I think I can score a lot more, it was easy, but this game doesn't grab me so likely only if I see a higher score will I try again as at the moment there is no challenge ] Galactic firebird: 46,125 ( 3- 8-2017) [ I played it briefly and don't feel that I've mastered this game at all, and I don't really like it, but I just played it a bit more to beat the highest score on stardot.org.uk... ] Guardian 471,150 (10-10-2017) (I got to wave 25 or 26) [ I only played it briefly, until I had beaten the highest score that I found on stardot.org.uk, then again a few games in Oct. as a test to see if the few months of no game playing affected my reflexes... (Note: This is the original Electron version on my BBC micro, so it is very fast, it is not a slowed down modified version to give the same speed on the BBC micro as it runs at on the Electron) ] Perhaps I will add some of my other scores to this list. - 2001: Electron hopper on BBC: This was for fun, it runs very fast, but gets almost unplayable at the highest scores that I got to which are 9410 (earlier than 20 Oct 2001), 10450 (I think from 20 oct 2001). Perhaps I scored more and wrote it down somewhere, but these are the only ones I can find for now (in emails). Also fun to try is Turbo-snapper (= Electron Snapper running on a BBC micro). Note: That various Electron games run faster on a BBC micro doesn't mean this is always the case for all games. It depends on other factors, such as the game's built in speed limitation, which can mean that executing speed of the game code may not affect the game speed at all but is limited by e.g. vertical refresh (50Hz).
