The grayscale scans on this website have been smoothed (contrast enhanced). This loses the texture from the paper that unedited scans and the colour scans show, but it does mean 300dpi scans in LZW tiff or gif take up only about 0.5 MB vs ca. 3 MB for a colour jpeg at good quality (and much, much larger gif/tiff of the unedited scan).
